Excellent woodworking machinery is particularly important for furniture manufacturers, which drives the continuous development of domestic woodworking machinery. Currently, Chinese woodworking machinery is actively exported and has a presence in the European market.
Guangdong province is home to a large number of woodworking machinery companies, which have voluntarily established the Lunjiao Woodworking Machinery Chamber of Commerce. As the chamber's chairman, He Peiliu, also chairman of Weideli Machinery, has observed the urgent demand from manufacturers for automated woodworking equipment during the current wave of industrial upgrading and transformation. He has increased investment in the development of CNC, industrial control, network automation, and other advanced equipment.
In the new era, woodworking machinery is no longer a simple single-purpose device that merely performs drilling, cutting, or sawing operations. Traditional mechanical equipment mainly saves labour and time during standard processing steps. He Peiliu notes: "If you visit factories in the home appliance, electronics, or telecommunications equipment sectors, you will find that their manufacturing equipment is far more advanced in terms of automation and intelligence than that used in furniture production – especially in the automotive industry, which represents the pinnacle of mechanical automation. Inspired by these industries, we have intensified our development of new woodworking processing equipment. Through CNC, industrial control, and advanced network automation, we achieve greater precision in carving, drilling, cutting, and other processes, allowing for more varied machining of irregular-shaped wood and better meeting the personalised production needs of manufacturers."
Although some domestic manufacturers still prefer to import foreign equipment, and domestic machines indeed lag slightly behind in machining accuracy – with some advanced automation technologies still subject to strict technology embargoes by foreign countries – domestic woodworking machinery is nevertheless undergoing continuous upgrades.
Comparing domestic equipment with imported alternatives, He Peiliu highlights several advantages. First, in terms of price, Chinese equipment is more cost‑effective due to lower shipping and manufacturing costs, making it more accessible to a broader range of manufacturers. Second, for maintenance and repair, domestic providers generally offer free after‑sales service and can respond quickly, saving valuable production time for factories. Additionally, as more automated equipment requires ongoing software and system upgrades, the cost of such upgrades from foreign suppliers is prohibitively high. Moreover, due to differences in regional conditions and manufacturing environments, foreign equipment may not always be suitable for all domestic factories. Domestic equipment suppliers are closer to the market, better understand factory usage habits and real needs, and can therefore provide more appropriate equipment and services.
Actively Expanding into the European Market
With the strong recovery of China's woodworking machinery trade, Chinese companies are actively exploring the European market. The LIGNA – the international trade fair for the forestry and woodworking industry – will be held from May 6 to 10 at the Hannover Exhibition Centre, and China has become one of the top 10 participating countries at LIGNA.
China's woodworking machinery sector still lags behind world‑advanced levels. To promote healthy industry development, companies must operate with integrity, self‑discipline, and strengthen brand building.
In the international market, Chinese mid‑range woodworking machinery is highly competitive. In terms of geometric accuracy, product appearance, structural performance, noise levels, and other indicators, Chinese mid‑range products are not far behind their international counterparts, yet their prices are only a fraction of those of imported models.
Chinese mid‑range woodworking machinery offers high quality and excellent market competitiveness. However, looking at the overall technological development of the industry, domestic manufacturers still lag behind advanced foreign competitors in terms of brand recognition and acceptance. As the global furniture and wood products industries grow rapidly, the ability to simultaneously develop and launch new products will be an inevitable trend. A lack of independent innovation and concurrent R&D capabilities will impact the survival and growth of woodworking machinery companies.
Although China's woodworking machinery industry started later than its foreign counterparts, it has been actively absorbing advanced technologies from abroad in recent years and has developed its own advanced equipment. It is clear that the future prospects for China's woodworking machinery industry remain very promising.
