What is Blockboard?

Blockboard, commonly known as "big‑core board" in Chinese, is a panel made by gluing and pressing a core of spliced wooden strips between two face veneers. The total thickness of the veneers glued on both sides of the blockboard must be no less than 3 mm. For all types of blockboard, edge defects shall not exceed 5 mm in width and 20 mm in length within the nominal panel size.

The core strip is produced from high‑quality natural solid wood that has been heat‑treated (i.e., dried in a kiln) and then machined into strips of specified dimensions. These strips are spliced together using a panel splicing machine. After splicing, two layers of high‑quality veneers are applied to each side of the core, and the whole assembly is bonded under cold pressing and hot pressing to form the finished board.

Because blockboard is a special type of plywood, its manufacturing process must follow the symmetry principle to prevent warping and deformation. As a thick panel, blockboard offers the attractive appearance and comparable strength of ordinary thick plywood. However, it is lighter in weight, uses less adhesive, requires lower investment, and gives a solid‑wood feel that meets consumers' desire for real‑wood furniture.

The main functions of the spliced core strip are to provide the necessary thickness and strength to the board. The upper and lower middle plies (crossbands) give the board sufficient transverse strength while compensating for any unevenness of the core that might affect surface flatness. The top face veneer (thin veneer, generally no thicker than 1 mm) not only improves the appearance but also increases the longitudinal strength of the panel.
